This happens more than I would care to talk about but today as @Stephen Mahood and I made our way to Centro de Coyoacan a Toyota Avlon, one of those nice looking bmw like Toyotas, cut us off cause they didn’t us a turn signal. Fortunately this time my brakes kicked in and we stopped short of hitting his rear end (though I had a mind to hit it on principle).
I hear that drivers in Boston are very similar to drivers here in Mexico City, but I don’t know that experience, all I can say is not using a turn signal happens on regular basis here. This Toyota went a bit a farther, it sped up on me as we approached a speed bump, something that makes no sense since they have to brake before going over it, but in this case the Toyota sped up and turned on the speed bump giving us no option but to slam or I guess squeeze on the brakes. I could tell that @Stephen Mahood was pissed cause he didn’t even curse in spanish, but instead a loud “ASSHOLE!!!” was heard by the people on the street and hopefully the driver of the Toyota.
Apparently sharing the street is not accepted here, it is not like bikes take up that much space, though there are times when @Stephen Mahood will ride in the middle of the lane. He insists it is to protect us, I will believe him, but that does not happen that often. Bikes do not cause traffic we speed through and past cars as they wait for lights to turn but rarely is a biker blocking traffic.
It seems it will be years if not centuries before bikes are seen and not cut off but I spose the “markets” have spoke and since automobiles contribute more to the waist but also top the profits of the system bikes I guess are seen or not, actually. I guess more to the point, outside of someone yelling at a car, what other ways can we signal to cars that hey try not to cut us off and if they do should the biker slap the car or what? Ideas anyone?
p.s. I am working on a post about where I came from, cause I am not new, but more like reborn, though not in the religious way
